College Wrestlers Academic Eligibility

The very first step any prospective student athlete would be wise to take is to register with the NCAA Eligibility Center, formally known as the Initial-Eligibility Clearinghouse. There are academic standards and requirements that all hopeful collegiate athletes must meet before they can become eligible to receive a wrestling scholarship.

With an emphasis on all athletes being exemplary students as well, the more impressive your grades and academic standing, the more the NCAA Clearinghouse and any university will be able to do for you when it comes to wrestling scholarships and your tuition.

Can a Wrestling Camp or Showcase Help?

Attending a wrestling camp or showcase can be a powerful tool, whether you are just starting out or have been wrestling for years. If you are looking to improve your skill, a wrestling camp can teach you new techniques and strategies to bring your game to the next level.

A wrestling camp is a great place for prospective student athletes to be noticed by coaches from the colleges they’d like to attend. If you can, going to a camp held by the school you’d like to attend is one of the best ways to show that school your skill and your interest, all while learning some more about your sport.

Wrestling Offers Only Equivalency Scholarships

Equivalency scholarships are the norm for all wrestling scholarships at the collegiate level. These scholarships are not what are usually called a “full-ride” scholarship. Schools that are assigned equivalency scholarships take their quota and split it up among a larger number of students at that school. This will mean the student or his or her family will have to supply some of their tuition, and the school will supply some as well.

Because Wrestling is an equivalency sport, the competition for scholarships will be even tougher. Money must be split among students, and coaches will have to weigh an athlete’s talents very heavily against all other potential students.

Collegiate Wrestling Scholarships

The scholarships offered for men’s wrestling at the collegiate level are equivalency scholarships.

NCAA Division I offers 9.9 scholarships per college.
NCAA Division II offers 9 scholarships per college.
NJCAA offers up to 16 scholarships per college (this is at the discretion of the university as to how many they will offer).
There are 46 community colleges that currently offer scholarships in wrestling.

Important: The NCAA Clearinghouse has been replaced by the NCAA Eligibility Center.

Attending a college wrestling summer camp could be the best recruiting move you could make.
