Bowie State University Athletic Scholarships

Bowie State University is a public institution in Prince George’s County, Maryland. It is one of the country’s oldest black universities. The undergraduate student body has over 4,000 enrollees. The institution offers 20 undergraduate majors, 20 master’s programs and 2 doctoral programs. Certificates of advanced study as well as graduate certificate programs are also offered in disciplines such as education, human resource development, computer science, nursing and organizational communication. Bowie State University has four colleges: arts and sciences, business, education and professional studies. The university also offers non-degree courses, continuing education, summer school, and experiential learning opportunities through internships or community service.

Athletics Department at Bowie State University

Athletics programs offered at Bowie State University includes varsity and intramural sports, as well as fitness activities. Dedicated to nurturing the student-athlete in both mind and body, Bowie State’s athletics department offers not only sports, but support services such as sports medicine and academic support. There is also a cheerleading team to support the varsity teams and boost the Bowie State morale at intercollegiate competitions.

Athletic facilities are all on campus and include the Bulldog Stadium the A.C. Jordan Arena and the Leonidas James Physical Education complex. All of the varsity sports teams compete and train in these facilities.

Athletic Programs at Bowie State University

Varsity sports teams include men’s basketball, cross country, football, and track and field. Women’s varsity sports include basketball, cross country, bowling, track and field, tennis, softball and volleyball. For students who cannot commit to varsity level athletics, intramural competitions in flag football, basketball, tennis, kickball, volleyball and racquetball are also available. In addition, students may participate in fitness activities and classes, such as Pilates, Latin dancing, rock climbing and more.

Official Sports Team: Bulldogs

The Bowie State Bulldogs are part of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Division II, which is a branch under the National Collegiate Athletic Association. The year 2013 saw some particular successes for the Bulldogs, with the women’s bowling team winning the CIAA Championships. The men’s basketball team also won the CIAA Championships. With an increasing record of success, the Bowie State Bulldogs are set to win even more championships in the future.

Scholarships at Bowie State University are based on academic merit, financial need, or both. Scholarship opportunities are available from the State of Maryland, federal funding, private donors, and corporate donors. Bowie State ensures that its students are able to afford their education, thus approximately 47% of students at Bowie receive institutional scholarships, while 34% receive state or local grants, and another 59% receive federal grants. All scholarships have an average value of $4,000 or more. All scholarships are awarded on an annual basis, and all students applying for funding must be sure to submit all application forms on or before the stated deadlines.
