Athletics Department at Bowdoin College
The athletics department at Bowdoin College seeks to support its students both in the field and in the classroom. Bowdoin College sees sports as an integral part of the college experience and a way to improve the skills and abilities of students that will benefit them in all facets of life. For these reasons and many more, a total of 1,750 student-athletes partake in athletic programs, not just to compete, but to improve their leadership skills, build community and give Bowdoin College positive representation in the community and at the games.
Facilities at Bowdoin College include soccer fields, baseball and softball diamonds, a swimming pool, golf course, sailing center, football field, and squash center among others, allowing the athletic department to support all varsity sports effectively.
Athletic Programs at Bowdoin College
Bowdoin College has 31 varsity sports with teams competing in the New England Small College Athletic Conference. Varsity sports being offered include, but are not limited to, baseball, ice hockey, lacrosse, squash, Nordic skiing, golf, tennis and football. In addition to these varsity sports, three levels of intramural sports, ranging in levels of commitment and competitiveness, are offered for students who do not wish to compete at the varsity level. The athletic department also offers 12 club sports.
Official Sports Team: Polar Bears
The Bowdoin Polar Bears have a long record of success in varsity sports. As members of the NCAA Division III, the Polar Bears compete in the New England Small College Athletic Conference. The women’s basketball and field hockey teams have been the most successful, winning numerous conference championships throughout the year. Other team championships include men’s hockey in 2013, men’s tennis in 2008, women’s volleyball in 2011, men’s cross country in 2001 and 2002, and women’s ice hockey in 2002, 2004, and 2013. The college’s coed sailing team was also placed among the top 20 sailing teams in the country in 2006.
Guide to Athletic Scholarships for Bowdoin College
Bowdoin College has approximately 44% of its students receiving some form of financial aid, with the average grant being valued at $36,750. Hyde scholarships, which are available to students who demonstrate academic excellence, are awarded to deserving students and are paid over a four-year period. National Merit scholarships, valued at either $1,000 or $2,000 depending on students’ eligibility to qualify for financial aid, are renewable and available to students who apply. Moreover, every year, 200 incoming freshmen receive awards valued anywhere from $3,000 to $56,000 each. The cost of one year at Bowdoin is at a high $84,000, with full paying families shouldering the costs at $57,000 per year. There are, however, no athletic scholarships available. With these high costs, it is no doubt that a high number of students receive scholarships.
