Austin College Athletic Scholarships
Austin College a leading liberal arts college founded by the Presbyterian Church in 1849.It is committed to its students’ personal and intellectual integrity, academic excellence and involvement in community life. With Austin’s study abroad programs 70% of students get enriching international experience before they graduate. Austin offers 50 major and minor courses in the undergraduate program. Austin accepts students of all races, religious beliefs, sexual orientation and economic status. Total population is 1,732 full-time and part-time undergraduate and graduate students. 93% of the 91 faculty members have a PhD or terminal degree. Student to faculty ratio is a low 13:1.
Modern facilities at the 85-acre Austin College Campus in Sherman, Texas include a library with huge periodical and media collections, science and technology centers, multi-purpose labs and observatory, social science center, language house, art studio complex, health and career services center; fitness pavilion, gymnasium, natatorium, stadium, baseball and soccer fields, tennis stadium, intramural complex, church, a college green for outdoor gatherings, and residence halls and apartments.
Austin College, being one of the USA’s top colleges for international focus, ranked ninth on the U.S. News 2006 list of most students studying abroad. The Princeton Review named it a“Best Western College”and included it in its Best 377 Colleges. It is listed in the “Guide to the 331 Most Interesting Colleges” by the U. S. News & World Report. Athletics Department of Austin College
Austin College Athletics Department endeavors to enhance, complement and extend the educational experience of student-athletes’ by providing them the opportunity to compete in the intercollegiate athletics program of NCAA Division III.
The Department encourages students to participate in club sports, intramural and outdoor recreation activities that will help improve their athletic abilities, inculcate core values of leadership, determination, fair play, respect and sportsmanship, develop appreciation of the importance of lifelong health and fitness, and excel in important life skills. There are enough modern and spacious sports and recreation facilities in the campus, and ample support from competent coaches, trainers and staff that are determined to lead the student-athletes to intercollegiate success.
Athletics Programs of Austin College
Austin College became a member of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) on July 1, 2006 when it replaced Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. Prior to SCAC Austin College was a member of the American Southwest Conference (ASC), Texas Conference, and the Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association (TIAA).
Austin College’s varsity sports program includes men’s sports such as football, baseball, softball, basketball, soccer, tennis, and swimming and diving. Women’s sports consist of volleyball, basketball, tennis, soccer, and cross country. Aside from varsity sports there are also club sports, recreational sports and cheerleading teams that students can join. Austin College plays in NCAA Division III. Each year there are over 225 student athletes who participate in varsity competitions. The student-athletes are ably supported by the College’s athletic trainers and health care providers who coordinate with physicians in preparing the student-athletes and keeping them in competitions in terms of injury prevention, emergency care, diagnosis, treatment, management and rehabilitation.
Official Sports Team: AC Kangaroos
The Kangaroos won a National Championship in 1981 when they were still playing in the NAIA Division II. The AC Kangaroos won eight conference championships between 1920 and 1988. In 2004-2005, 28 student-athletes received all-conference athletic honors while 61 students were recognized with all-conference academic honors. In the 2010-2011 academic year the ‘Roos had 22 student-athletes as All-SCAC honorees and one honored as All-Region selection, SCAC Player of the Year and SCAC Newcomer of the Year; five student athletes were ESPN Academic All-District Team honorees.
Guide to Athletic Scholarships for Austin College
Austin College, just like any other NCAA Division III members, does not offer athletic scholarships. There are, however, several need-based financial aid packages and merit scholarships in varying amounts for which interested student-athletes may apply. There are also state and federal grants, loan programs, federal work-study program and scholarships from outside sources.
In an effort to make education accessible to as many students as possible, Austin College works closely with student applicants and their parents and customizes financial aid packages and financing arrangements that best fit the needs of the family. Almost 95% of Austin College students get financial assistance in varying forms and amounts.
