Athletics Department of Appalachian State University

The athletics department of Appalachian State University includes sports, recreation and fitness. These outdoor programs of the university are designed for educational, recreational and developmental necessities through experiential learning methods and the natural environment.

These activities and trips are interesting and low-cost. Some of these educational programs lead the students to international explorations of adventurous discoveries. Also, there are fitness and recreation centers in Appalachian State University for fitness classes and workshops that help the community maintain good health and appropriate lifestyle.

Appalachian State University recreation programs offer more than 80 activities like basketball, flag football, golf, horseshoe, racquetball, soccer and softball. Specifically, club sports encourage members of the community to compete on a non-varsity level.

The varsity sports program of Appalachian State University covers men’s sports, such as baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, indoor and outdoor track and field, soccer, tennis and wrestling. On the other hand, women’s sports consist of basketball, cross country, field hockey, golf, indoor and outdoor track and field, soccer, softball, tennis and volleyball. Intramural and club sports provide levels of competition in all activities, in order to help the students develop their talents and abilities.

OFFICIAL SPORTS TEAM: Appalachian State Mountaineers

The Appalachian State Mountaineers prides itself with sports teams that have garnered recognition in national championships and title cups in top men’s and women’s all-sports programs. Between 2005 and 2007, the football team of Appalachian State University earned three NCAAS DIV I FCS national championships. Nineteen of the Appalachian fields 20 NCAA Division I varsity sports compete in the Southern Conference (SoCon), and for eight times, the Mountaineers won the SoCon Commissioner’s and the Germann cups.

About 40% of student-athletes earn academic honors with the minimum average grade of 3.25. Yosef Club members also receive tangible benefits, depending on annual giving levels. Tangible benefits range from tax deductibles, gifts and privileges, to travel opportunities with the team.
