Dietary Supplements and Weights  Two studies completed at major universities and sponsored by General Nutrition Centers, Inc. (GNC) were presented at the conference.

 

The Exercise Physiology Lab at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln presented results of a study documenting the benefits of leucine and whey protein to increase muscle size and strength when used as part of a structured resistance training program. In addition, the Human Performance Laboratories at the University of Memphis presented results of clinical testing of a supplement combining creatine, carbohydrates and amino acids and the positive effects on exercise performance.

Longevity Exercise And Weight  New research findings from the Department of Nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health and Brigham and Women’s Hospital show that increased body fatness measured by body-mass index (BMI) and reduced physical activity are both strong and independent predictors of early death in women. The study appears in the December 23, 2004 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.

Strength Training For Seniors  The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), has issued  its 1st position statement on aging and exercise, stressing the importance of strength training for older people. Among other recommendations, the report goes on to say that older frail people who are starting to exercise should begin with strength training before they start an aerobic program.

Why People Stay Away From The Gym  We have good intentions of going to the gym on a regular basis to stay in shape, but many of us don’t even make if through the front doors. What is it we are avoiding by not going to the gym? The American Council on Exercise (ACE), America’s non-profit fitness advocate, recently polled over 1,500 Web site visitors posing the question “What keeps you from going to the gym?”
