rock climbing

Rock Climbing is a major leisure activity or sport for 1000's of enthusiasts. There are many different styles of rock climbing. These include Traditional Climbing, Indoor Climbing,  Bouldering, and many more. Rock climbing is a risky sport which demands endurance and physical strength, it poses a different kind of challenge, excitement, and adrenaline rush which is probably why so many people take up the sport with such enthusiasm.

For a very long time, Rock Climbing was seen only as a part of Mountain Climbing, where mountain climbers would climb routes to prepare themselves for a big climbing expedition. It served as a form of training in order to improve their mountain climbing skills. In the 1920s, it gradually became known in the USA as an essential factor in mountaineering. In the 1950s, Rock Climbing was finally seen as a sport in it's own right. More and more people started to take part. This paved the way for the development of grading system. The climbing grading system indicates the difficulty of the climb and measures the climber’s ability to complete the climb.

The period since 1972 has seen great climbers and great technological evolution in the sport.  For the most part climbing now focuses on difficulty.  How small can the holds be, how steep the cliff, how long before a human being just can't climb?  Very small, very steep and very long are the answers.

The technology of the sport now focuses on safety and preventing damage to the environment.  Ropes are durable, strong and flexible.  They have been proven to hold 100 foot falls.  Metal protection devices (camming units and metal wedges called chocks) provide safety and do not cut into the rock the way pitons did. Knowledge of how to climb safely and politely is now widespread. Polite and safe are 2 words used often in Rock Climbing today.
