The first volleyball net was borrowed from tennis. It was only six feet and six inches. Back then the average American was shorter, so today modifications have been made to create more proper net and court dimensions. As far as the net goes, the height now varies from men to women competition. For men, the standard height, which is always measured from the center of the net, is 7 feet 11 5/8 inches, and for women it is 7 feet 4 1/8 inches. The height on the sides of the net cannot be more than ¾ inches higher that the height in the center. When there is a co-ed competition, it is played at the men’s height. For the court, the dimensions are 29 feet 6 inches by 59 feet for singles and 30 feet by 60 feet for doubles. If you are playing volleyball in the sand, the sand depth must be at least 30 centimeters, and sand quality is very important. There are a number of brands that can make portable or in-ground volleyball nets. Look for companies like Champion Sports, MacGregor, Markwort, Tachikara, SSG/BSN, and Stackhouse.
