How to Find College Scholarships

There was a time when you had to be well-connected or—at the very least—an amateur detective to take advantage of college scholarship opportunities. While those qualities won’t hurt your cause today, the internet has leveled the playing field and made the plentiful scholarship opportunities easier to access than ever before.

Scholarship opportunities can be broken down into two main categories. There are those who earn scholarships through outstanding academic performance; and there are those that are given scholarships based on financial need. Many scholarships are a combination of academic performance and financial need.
Scholarship opportunities are especially numerous for those groups that are traditionally underrepresented on college campuses. These would include racial minorities—particularly blacks and Hispanics—and women.

There are so many scholarship opportunities today that there is seemingly something for everyone. For instance, everybody has heard of an athletic scholarship, but how many have heard of left-handed scholarships?

Scholarships do not have to be paid back and many can be renewed each year. So this will be free and clear money to help pay for a place to live, tuition, books and food.

Another useful method to find scholarship opportunities is by searching the area of study. Just about every major has scholarship opportunities for deserving students. For example, there are a wide range of scholarship opportunities for students studying engineering or nursing.

There are many colleges and universities that offer very specific scholarship opportunities for students who attend their school. They do not want to turn away students for financial reasons and they sometimes will help you find scholarship money to make it work.

But what if you are not a woman or racial minority or even left-handed? And maybe you are unsure of what subject area you want to study in the future. Are there scholarship opportunities out there for you?

As a matter of fact there are scholarship opportunities for average students as well. You just have to know where to look.
A good place to start is in your state or town. Many states offer financial incentives to keep students studying in state schools. This way the local economy will have an ample supply of highly-educated workers.

Your local church or gym or rotary club may offer scholarship opportunities to the right student. Sometimes all you have to do is ask.

College scholarship opportunities are increasingly available through large corporations. Once you’ve achieved your four-year degree and are in the work force it is not uncommon for a company to foot the entire bill to send you to graduate school. They are making an investment in you.

When you decide to take that next step on the educational ladder you are making an investment in you. Achieving a higher education can be one of the truly transformative experiences in a young person’s life.

And with the abundance of scholarship opportunities for just about everybody there is perhaps no better time to be looking for scholarship money.
