Indiana University graduates receive Postgraduate Grant

 Dennison, Giesler Awarded NCAA Scholarships.

Indiana University.

Recent Indiana University graduates Audrey Giesler (cross country track) and Karen Dennison (golf) have both received an NCAA postgraduate scholarship.

The NCAA has awarded 58 postgraduate scholarships of $7,500 each to 29 men and 29 women who have participated in spring sports, which included men's and women's golf, men's and women's tennis, baseball, women's equestrian as an emerging sport,  men's and women's lacrosse, women's rowing, softball,  men's and women's outdoor track and field, men's volleyball and women's water polo.

In addition to the spring sport honorees, the NCAA also awarded 116 postgraduate scholarships to student-athletes that have participated in winter and fall sports in which the NCAA conducts championships or is an emerging sport, for a total of 174 postgraduate scholarships annually.

To qualify for an NCAA postgraduate scholarship, a student-athlete must have had an overall GPA  of 3.200 (on a 4.000 scale) or its equivalent and must also have performed with distinction as a member of the varsity team in the sport in which the student-athlete was nominated.

The student-athlete must have behaved, both on and off the field, in a manner that has brought credit to the student-athlete, the institution and intercollegiate athletics. The student-athlete also must have the intention to continue academic work beyond the baccalaureate degree as a full-time or part-time graduate student.

Giesler and Dennison join former IU men’s soccer star Brian Maisonnueve (1995) and diver Kimiko Hirai Soldati (1997) as the only Indiana student-athletes in school history to receive such a prestigious honor. Maisonnueve has spent the last eight seasons with the Columbus Crew of the MLS, while Soldati will represent the United States in the three-meter competition at next month’s Olympic games in Athens, Greece.

Giesler also has Olympic aspirations, as she will compete in the 3,000m steeplechase at the Olympic Track and Field Trials July 15 in Sacramento, Calif. Giesler closed her collegiate career with back-to-back NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships appearances.

Giesler became the first female IU All-American in the 3,000m Steeplechase, after she placed 11th with a time of 10:35.98. After winning the 2003 Big Ten 3,000m steeplechase title with a record time of 10:14.19, she took second in the event at the Big Ten Championships with a second-place finish.

The 2003 Tichenor Award winner as the Hoosier female student-athlete with the highest grade point average, Giesler has twice earned College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA)/Verizon Academic All-District honors and was a 2003 Academic All-American. In cross country, Giesler earned all-league honors as a junior and senior and helped the Hoosiers to their first back-to-back NCAA Championship appearances since 1989-90.

Dennison has been named to the 2004 Verizon/CoSIDA University Division Women's At-Large Academic All-District V and All-American teams. The sports marketing and management major is coming off a successful senior season. She won two individual titles during the 2003-04 campaign at the Shootout at the Legends and the Indiana Invitational, and helped the team win the Baylor-Tapatio Springs Shootout. Dennison was also a two-time first team All-Big Ten selection who earned a sponsor’s exemption to compete in the 2003 Giant Eagle LPGA Classic. She finished with a 153 (75-78), missing the cut by eight strokes.

Medal of Honor, presented each year to a male and female senior student-athlete at each league institution who maintained an outstanding scholastic rating and who distinguished themselves in athletic endeavors.
