university of the ozarks

University of the Ozarks. originally called Cane Hill School, was established in 1834 by the Cumberland Presbyterians In 1891. Cane Hill College ceased operations and its successor, Arkansas Cumberland College, was founded in Clarksville, Arkansas. In 1920, the name was altered to The College of the Ozarks, and in 1987 the institution achieved full university recognition and was renamed University of the Ozarks.

The University of the Ozarks has always had a relationship with the Presbyterian Church. At one time, the college was owned by the Arkansas-Oklahoma Synod of the United Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). In 1960, the Board of National Missions of the United Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) took over the ownership and control responsibility for the school. When the board of National Missions relinquished its relationship to its mission colleges in 1973, an elected Board of Trustees the assumed administrative responsibility and ownership of the University. This Board receives continued financial and spiritual and support from the Synod of the Sun, which is comprised of churches in Louisiana, Oklahoma, Texas and Arkansas.

The Institution was the 1st historically white college in the state to admit an African-American in 1957and the 1st college in Arkansas to see a woman graduate in 1872. Though these are common practices in higher education today, at the time it was a courageous step for a small college in the South to take the 1st steps toward equal educational opportunities for every American.

The University continues with this tradition of innovation, the School established the 1st program in the world to educate college students with learning disabilities. Beginning in 1971 with a just a handful of students and few dedicated faculty members, the program has grown to to over ninety students.

The University is a member institution of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III and the American Southwest Conference, which includes teams from Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas and Mississippi.

As a member of the East Division of the American Southwest Conference, the school competes against Austin College, Mississippi College, University of Texas at Dallas, East Texas Baptist University, LeTourneau University, Louisiana College and University of Texas at Tyler.
