The focus of the early academic programs was on gold and silver, and, in particular, the assaying of those metals. As the institution grew, its mission expanded to include petroleum engineering, environmental engineering, earth sciences, materials science and applied sciences. The Colorado School of Mines is a member institution of the National Collegiate athletic Association and a member of the Rocky Mountain Conference. The College offers the following varsity sports: Baseball, Men's Basketball, Women's Basketball, Cross country, Football, Golf, Men's Soccer, Women's Soccer, Softball, Swimming, track and Field, Volleyball and Wrestling.
