tai chi chuan

history of Tai chi chuan

The original Tai Chi form is called "Chen" style and was practiced in the Chinese Shaolin Temple since the 15th Century. All other Tai Chi styles were later taken from the Chen style. Until early this century Tai Chi was considered a secret practice passed down through families and loyal students.

The art of Tai Chi has come down to the present through 3 major family traditions. Firstly  Chen, with its combination of explosive and soft power techniques. The 2nd is Yang, with its even-flowing and smooth tempo. The 3rd is Wu which uses elements from both the Chen and Yang forms.

Tai Chi Chuan is a Chinese martial art that is mainly practiced for its health benefits and as a means of dealing with stress and tension. The art emphasizes total relaxation, and is essentially a form of meditation, or what has been called "meditation in motion." Unlike the hard martial arts, tai chi is characterized by slow, soft  flowing movements that emphasize force, rather than brute strength. Though it is slow, soft and flowing, the movements are executed precisely.

The history of Tai Chi Chuan goes back to the fourteenth century when Chang San Fung, a Taoist monk, watched a fight between a snake and a crane. He saw how the soft circular movements of the snake overcame the hard movements of the bird and he invented a martial arts system of self-defense based on that principle. The evolution and growth of the art has followed the styles of many masters with a variety of forms. At one time these forms were closely guarded secrets among certain families in China. The secrets of Tai Chi were revealed when Ying Kit Tung opened schools in Peking during the 1st half of this century.
