shorinji kempo

history of shorinji kempo

Shorinji Kempo is a martial art devised simply for self defence. Unlike most martial arts it is non-competitive, and focuses on developing the persons mind and body.

Shorinji Kempo was developed in Japan after World War II and was founded by Doshin.

During World War II Doshin studied Martial Arts and philosophical teachings in China at a number of schools, eventually becoming the twentieth master of the Northern Shorinji Giwamonken school.

When he came back to Japan, Doshin decided to devote the rest of his life to developing the kind of people that would help to form a better society. With this aim he set up a Dojo where he refined his philosophies and techniques, founding the Shorinji Kempo that is practiced today.

At the present time Shorinji Kempo is the most popular form of martial art in Japan and is enjoyed by over 1.4 million people in twenty eight countries worldwide.

Shorinji Kempo is a very sophisticated ninja-style martial art that combines the best of Chinese Kung Fu with the techniques of the ancient Japanese precursors to Ju Jutsu. Shorinji Kempo uses a balance between the soft techniques of Judo, the hard techniques of systems such as Karate, and joint locking techniques much like those of Ju Jutsu. A very important aspect of this style is the application of pressure to the vital points of the human body. Zen meditation is practiced in each class to regulate breathing, overall awareness and to calm the mind.
