Kung fu became very popular in China when the teachers included mind training as part of the daily workouts. The result of this combination of mental as well as physical exercise is the martial art we know today

Zen or Chan was introduced to the Shaolin monks by an Indian priest named Bodhidharma. It is said that he  would catch the monks falling asleep during meditation. In order to assist them with their meditation he introduced breathing exercises for health, meditation, self-development, and self-defense.

Kung fu has a wide variety variety of movements, systems, weapons and traditions when compared to most other martial arts. There are hard and soft types of martial arts in China. Both of these styles include the use of weapons. Some of the weapons used include the broadsword, staff, kwan do, butterfly knives and three section staff. It has been estimated that there are over two hundred different styles of kung fu.

Kung fu in China is steeped in the country's five thousand year history.  Many historians believe that Chinese Kung Fu is the oldest method of combat training from which all other styles and methods were eventually derived. Chinese Kung Fu is thought to have been introduced to the Okinawan people as Karate In the later part of the sixth century. Chinese Kung Fu is arguably one of the oldest styles of martial arts.

A good martial arts system combines both the body and the mind as well as practical self defense. The movements are combined in the styles sets or forms. These forms are like living dictionaries of all the movements. This is how the old  Kung Fu masters would pass down their martial arts to following generations. As complex as most martial arts systems are the Chinese kung fu systems can take a lifetime to master and understand.
