history of JuJITSU

Ju-Jitsu is considered to be one of the oldest martial arts in the world. No one knows exactly where or how Ju-Jitsu started but historical records show that it is least 2500 years old.

Although it has its origins in ancient Japan, it is also believed to be of Chinese origin as well. Records have been found in Japan, China, Persia, Germany, and Egypt. Ju-jitsu was influenced by many fighting styles, incorporating parts of all of them. Ju-Jitsu is the parent martial art of Aikido, Judo and Karate.
One of the 1st mentions of Ju-Jitsu is in Japanese mythology, where it is said that the gods Kadori and Kajima used Ju-Jitsu to discipline the lawless and wild inhabitants of the Eastern provinces.

The martial art of Ju-Jitsu began to grow during the period of clan warfare in Japan, from the 8th to the 16th centuries. During this time of constant civil war, the different styles of armed combat were undergoing continuous revision and refinement on the battlefield. The weaponless styles of Ju-Jitsu were integrated into the training of the Samurai during this time.
In 1603, Tokugawa Leysu unified Japan under the control of the Tokugawa government, and so began the era that bears their name. During this time, as Japan was united, there was less and less armed warfare, and so the weaponless style of Ju-Jitsu became more and more prominent.

The Philosophy:

Jujitsu revolves around 3 basic states of mind – Zanshin, Fudoshin and Mushin. The proper combination of these elements gave the power, preparation and potential to the practitioner to excel in the Jujitsu art.

1. Zanshin – “remaining spirit” –  the readiness for anything at any given time.

2..Fudoshin - "immovable mind" –during times of confrontation.

3.  Mushin – “no mind” – Its spontaneity permits instantaneous action without conscious thought

Basic Methods:

Jujitsu is a circular, hard and soft, external combat style. The basic techniques of attacks includes throws, locks, hitting and striking, thrusting and punching, pinning and immobilizing, strangling and joint-locking, with strong emphasis on throws, locks, and defensive techniques. In-fighting and close work are also focused upon.

Even though Jujitsu is basically an unarmed fighting system, small weapons like the Tanto (knife), Jitte (truncheon),  or Kakushi Buki (hidden weapons), which include the Ryofundo Kusari (weighted chain) or the Bankokuchoki (a type of knuckle-duster) may also be used in combat.
