history of jeet kune do

Bruce Lee's Martial Arts Masterpiece

Jeet Kune Do is the only non-classical style of Chinese Kung Fu practiced today. The art is simple in its execution, although not so simple to explain. Jeet means 'to stop, to intercept, to stem, ' while Kune means 'fist' or 'style,' and Do means 'the way' or 'the ultimate reality.' Put it together and you have The Way of the Intercepting Fist.'

Jeet Kune Do is not a new style of karate or kung-fu but rather an amalgam of different styles. Bruce Lee did not invent a new martial art composite style, nor did he modify a style to set it apart from any existing method. His idea was to free his followers from clinging to any style, pattern, or mold.

The total picture Lee wanted to present to his students was that above everything else, the students must find their own path to truth. He never hesitated to say, 'Your truth is not my truth; my truth is not yours'.

No Martial art is better than any other. That is the object lesson of Jeet Kune Do, to be unbound, to be free: in combat to use no style as style, to use no way as the way, to have no limitation as the only limitation. Neither be against or for a certain style. In other words, Jeet Kune Do 'just is'.

Although the philosophy of Jeet Kune Do has been interpreted by many people as general open mindedness, the basic philosophy of Jeet Kune Do can best be summed up in this statement, "The height of cultivation, leads to simplicity and simplicity is the pinnacle of refinement". Simplicity in the art translates into functional and effective, efficiency. Jeet Kune Do is a science with a philosophy that is expressed individually as art. To take away any of the 3 components from the model, is to change the model, thus changing the name, that so aptly describes the "strategic ideal" known as interception.
