history of aikido

The Japanese martial art of Aikido was formulated by Master Morihei Ueshiba (1883 - 1969) who had studied several martial arts such as AikiJutsu and various sword fighting techniques. Master Ueshiba's new way of Aikido can be traced to these influences in his early life.

"In Aikido we learn about ourselves, we learn to join ourselves to the life force, and we learn how to see the underlying natural principles. Step by step, we make our path one of peace and brightness."

On the purely physical level Aikido it is an art involving some throws and joint locks that are taken from jiu-jitsu and some throws and other techniques that stem from kenjutsu. Aikido focuses not on kicking or punching opponents, but rather on using an opponents own energy to gain control over them or to throw them away from you. It is not a static art, but puts a lot of emphasis on motion and the dynamics of movement.

Aikido can be described as self-defense technique, spiritual enlightenment, physical health or peace of mind.

O Sensei emphasized the spiritual and moral aspects of this martial art, he placed a lot of emphasis on the development of peace and harmony. "The Way of Harmony of the Spirit" is one way that "Aikido" may be translated into English. This is still the case today, although different styles of aikido emphasize the more spiritual aspects to greater or lesser degrees. the idea of a martial discipline striving for peace and harmony may seem paradoxical, it is the most basic tenet of the art.

Aikido has been interpreted in many different ways by students who trained under O Sensei and then spread their knowledge of Aikido by opening their own dojos. Due, among other things,  Thus different styles of Aikido were born. Each style has its own strengths and weaknesses, but all are firmly rooted in the basic concepts which make Aikido the unique martial art that it is. None should be considered superior or inferior to any other, but rather an individual must find a style which best suits him or her.
