Calorie Control  If you're one of those people who packed on a few extra pounds during the holidays and are now resolved to lose weight, you're not alone. With almost two-thirds of Americans overweight (according to government statistics), dieting is top of mind in 2003. And one of the latest trends in dieting is the use of Web-based resources and tools for weight loss.

 

Dietary Supplements  The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has sent warning letters to 16 dietary supplement distributors who are making false and misleading claims for weight loss products promoted over the internet.

Genes And Weight Gain  "We're not acknowledging the strength of genetic factors in our weight loss strategies," says James C. Romeis, PhD, professor of health services research at Saint Louis University School of Public Health, in a news release. "You've got this genetic thing working against you that helps to explain why you're so heavy and why you may fail at weight loss programs and diets."

Obesity Statistics  The weight-loss industry is finding itself in the crosshairs of the Federal Trade Commission’s “Operation Big Fat Lies”—a crackdown on slimming pills, powders and patches that are too simply too good to be true. The Center for Consumer Freedom (CCF) recommends that grossly exaggerated statistics and hype from pharmaceutical and weight-loss companies about the nation’s so-called “obesity epidemic” should also be placed under the federal microscope.

Obesity in children There are many lessons learned on the playground.  Recess may be the only opportunity for some children to engage in social interactions with other children.

Protein Rich Diets  As nutrition experts debate the ideal combination of protein, carbohydrates and fat that people should eat, new research explains for the first time how and why a moderately high protein diet may be the best for losing weight.

Yogurt   While some calorie-conscious people may drop dairy products when they’re dieting, a new study suggests this strategy could backfire. Research presented at the Experimental Biology conference in April revealed that yogurt may help turn up the body’s fat-burning ability – making it easier to lose fat while maintaining lean muscle.

Women Over 40   It is much harder for women over 40 to lose weight than it was for them in their 20s and 30s, and the holidays are a particularly difficult time for many. In fact, recent studies show that Americans average a seven-pound weight gain each year from Thanksgiving through New Year’s. Susan Lark, M.D., a women’s health expert who advocates combining traditional medical protocols with alternative medicine, explains the medical reasons why and offers an innovative New Year’s weight-loss plan designed specifically for women in this age group.
