hockey national junior evaluation camp

The USA, by virtue of a 9-2 win and a 4-3 shootout loss, posted a 1-1-0 record vs. Sweden and Finland tonight in the teams' 2nd consecutive day of competition at the United States National Junior Evaluation Camp. Team Blue scored 6 goals in a Twenty-three shot 2nd period vs. Finland and finished with a 9-2 win. Team White allowed a late goal that led to a Twenty four player shootout, which Sweden won, also by a score of 4-3.

In Wednesday's 1st game at Ralph Engelstad Arena, Team Blue spotted Finland a one-goal lead less than a minute into the 2nd period, but answered at the 3:58 mark on a Patrick O'Sullivan (Winston-Salem, N.C./Mississauga Ice Dogs) strike. O'Sullivan, who also added an assist, opened and closed the 6 goal period for Team Blue, which used Phil Kessel (Madison, Wis./U.S. Nat. Under-18 Team), Matt Hunwick (Roseville, Mich./Univ. of Michigan), John Vigilante (Dearborn, Mich./Plymouth Whalers) and T.J. Hensick (Howell, Mich./Univ. of Michigan) goals to take a 6-1 lead at the end of two periods.

Team White, in the late game, became the first United States squad to hold a 1-0 lead at the event, courtesy of a Tyler Haskins (Madison, Ohio/Toronto St. Michael's) tally under 5 minutes into the 1st period. Sweden answered early in the 2nd and finished the frame with a 25-11 overall advantage in shots, but Team White goals from Kevin Porter (Detroit, Mich./Univ. of Michigan) and Chris Bourque (Topsfield, Mass./Boston Univ.) gave the U.S. a 3-1 lead at the end of two.

After cutting the lead in 1/2, Sweden pulled its goaltender and forced a shootout. Sweden, which opened the frame, scored on the third, 11th, 13th and 23rd shots of the shootout, while Dan Fritsche (Parma, Ohio/Columbus Blue Jackets), Bryan Lerg (Livonia, Mich./Michigan State Univ.) and Shawn Weller (Glens Falls, N.Y./Clarkson Univ.) converted for the U.S. on the 10th, 12th and 14th shots, respectively.

All 4 teams are off Aug. 12, and return to action Aug. 13 in Grand Forks, North Dakota where international rivals Sweden and Finland face off at 4 p.m. CST. Team USA Blue vs. Team USA White begins at 7 p.m.

The camp features Forty-two prospective American players for the 2005 IIHF World Junior Championship, which will be played in Grand Forks and Thief River Falls, Minnesota.
