history of karate

the development of karate and the martial arts

About this time a man by the name of Funakoshi had learned of karate in Okinawa. Funakoshi was born premature and never fully recovered until later in his life when he found that once he had practice karate for many years, he found that karate helped him to become strong and fully healthy.

He then started teach others, “Karate-do” or “a way of life”. In 1902, Funakoshi left Okinawa and instructed his first teachings of “Karate-do”.  In 1917, he instructed his first public demonstration of “Karate-do”. His teachings were impressive to the Japanese and it was then that karate became a part of the public school’s curriculum in Japan. Following the public schools, Japan’s military and colleges fell into the hype of karate as well. In 1939, the “Shoto-Kan” was opened, which was the first formal training school for Japan.

In 1949, one of Funakoshi’s students, Masatoshi Nakayama helped establish the JKA, or Japan Karate Association. It was then that the spread of Karate teachings began throughout the world. He also helped form the ISKF, the International Shotokan Karate Federation, which helped expand the teachings of Karate.

Currently there are four main styles of karate. The first is Shito-ryu, which was founded in 1889 by Kenwa Mabuni. Next, there is Shotokan, which was founded in 1868 by Funakoshi. This form is known for its deep strong stances and linear techniques. There is also “Wado-ryu” or (Way of Harmony), which was later founded in 1939. This form has an influence by both jujitsu and karate.  Wado-ryu focuses more on the spiritual discipline of karate and harmony. The fourth is Shito-ryu. This is a style that focuses on the power of execution. Shito-ryu was founded in 1889.

It has not been long that karate has been known as a sport. As karate has a history of use in battle, in modern times, there have been rules invented to help people hold actual matches in safety. Once this took place, athletes have come to notice the speed, complex techniques, and competitiveness to this sport and have become interested. Today, Karate has become an international teaching that is enjoyed by children and men and women of all ages. It is the balance between the mind and body that one learns through karate that draws more people to learning it on a professional level or for a recreation. Karate is a great teaching for the mind, body, and spirit and also as a sport teaches great sportsmanship.
