 RESEARCH relating to YOUTH ACTIVITY

parents can shape their young athletes' sports experience

"By bringing together experts in football at the 2002 conference, GSSI served as a catalyst in creating important changes to the NCAA pre-season training policy. In its first year of implementation, these new policies had a strong positive impact on the health and performance of our players," said Randall Dick, M.S., associate director of research and injury surveillance system of the NCAA and expert presenter at the 2004 GSSI conference.

"We're confident that the recommendations coming out of this year's conference will have the same capacity to create an impact -- this time among the key audiences that influence kids' involvement in sports, especially parents," he added.

Experts agree that parents have the best opportunity to shape their young athletes' sports experience. To help them create a positive one, experts at the conference produced a report titled "Kids and Sports: Maximizing Benefits, Minimizing Risks." The report includes important facts that parents should know as well as consensus recommendations for how parents can balance the extremes of the activity spectrum and keep young athletes safely in the game.

Additional recommendations will be shared with coaches, public health officials, physicians and medical organizations as well as youth sport organizations and associations, including:

National Alliance For Youth Sports (NAYS)       American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP)

National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA)     American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM)

National SAFE KIDS Campaign        American Sport Education  Program (ASEP)

"Our recommendations are based on much practical experience and some research," said Oded Bar-Or, M.D., professor of pediatrics and director of the Children's Exercise and Nutrition Centre at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, and a member of conference consensus committee. "I hope to see much more research in this area, to continue to inform us on the best ways to encourage kids to stay active," he added.

In reviewing the most current scientific studies on kids and activity, the experts overwhelmingly agreed that much more research needs to be done to better understand what drives obesity in some kids and sports burnout in others.

Established in 1988, The Gatorade Sports Science Institute, headquartered in Barrington, Illinois, is a research and educational facility dedicated to enhancing the performance and well being of athletes. Every year, GSSI educates our more than 100,000 members who are primarily sports and health professionals on the latest sports science information through direct communications, educational programs and tools, conferences and professional meetings in the U.S. and around the world.
