Averett University Athletic Scholarships
Averett University is a four-year private coeducational liberal arts institution founded in 1859. Although Baptist-affiliated, Averett welcomes all students from diverse backgrounds and cultures to fulfill its mission of producing tomorrow’s catalysts for positive change. The University offers associate’s, bachelor’s and master’s degree programs; distance learning program where students can learn at their own pace, place and time; and Community Programs that include life-enriching yet affordable and non-credit classes and free lectures where Averett faculties interact with Danville communities. There are over 2,000 students, and full-time and part-time faculty of 124 and a student – faculty ratio of 10:1.
Averett’s main campus for traditional undergrads sits on a 19-acre property on West Main Street in Danville, Virginia. Inside are 27 buildings that include facilities for the school’s administration, academics and recreation facilities and several residence halls. The 70-acre North Campus along the Mount Cross Road, houses the baseball, soccer and football fields, and the Cougar Den Stadium. The Riverview Campus on Bridge Street houses the central administrative offices for the University’s Graduate and Professional Studies (GPS) Program. For fliers and riders, there’s the AverettAviation Center at Danville Regional Airport, and the Equestrian Center on 115 acres of land on Gammon Road in Pelham, NC.
Averett is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE). It has been awarded the first-ever Pinnacle Award by the Chamber of Commerce of Danville-Pittsylvania County. Averett got a #23 ranking Regional Colleges (South) from the U.S. News & World Report; the Washington Monthly College Guide ranked Averett a top 50 baccalaureate college in 2011, and rated by GI Jobs Magazine as a military-friendly school for 2011 and 2012.

At the Athletics Department of Averett University it’s all about sportsmanship. Student-athletes are molded into individuals who play fair, who can be very competitive and still respect everyone else on and off the court or field. Being a closely-knit group, Averett’s coaches, trainers, staff and student-athletes treat one another like family and solid support is given to the playing teams.
The University offers athletic training programs aimed at preparing students for the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Board of Certification (NATA-BOC) Examination, and provides undergraduates with the knowledge and skills that will pave the way for a rewarding career in athletic training. The focus of the program is on the outstanding academic and clinical foundation that students should possess to be able to become successful professional athletic trainers.

Averett University is affiliated with NCAA Division III and plays in the USA South Atlantic Conference.
Almost half of Averett’smale students play varsity sports such as basketball, baseball, football, tennis, soccer, cross country and golf. One-fifth of the females, on the other hand, are into varsity sports that include volleyball, basketball, softball, soccer, tennis, cross country, equestrian and cheerleading. The University’s population is so small that everybody else who’s not playing is cheering the teams on in every game. Even the students of athletic training are at hand to apply their skills and knowledge in actual clinical situations, should the need arise.

The Cougars have won more than 400 games and many athletic awards and recognitions from 1994 to 2012, the highlights of which are: six conference titles – 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1999, 2000, four Don Scalf Award Student-Athlete of the Year (women’s tennis),2003 USA South Conference Tournament championship (baseball); four USA South Athletic Conference championships (basketball); 14 games in three straight seasons (2008-2011),record-setting 17 overall wins and 12 conference wins in the 2009-2010 season (women’s basketball); first conference championship in 2006, and a total of 99 USA South All-Conference players in 11 seasons until 2010 (football); 2004 USA South Tournament title (softball); nine regular season and seven conference tournament titles (women’s volleyball); 10 conference championships – 1987, 1989,1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004 & 2007 and five straight NCAA Tournament appearances in program history, 1996-2000 (men’ tennis); first USA South Conference Tournament championship game appearance in 2010; and first USA South Conference Regular Season and Conference Tournament championships/first NCAA appearance and program record set with 17 total wins in 2012 (women’s soccer).

Averett University belongs to NCAA Division III and as such does not offer athletic scholarships. However, Averett grants generous need-based and academic financial aid to its students, regardless of whether they are athletes or not. In fact, the University awards $20 million in scholarships and financial aid annually, bringing down the cost for traditional undergraduates by as much as 40%. This is on top of the reasonable students’ costs which is more than 20% lower than similar colleges in Virginia.
Averett also assists students in getting federal and state grants, and students may also seek outside donors and sponsors. Work-study and loan programs are options that are likewise available to students.
