athletics  track & field

Athletics is also known as track and field or track and field athletics. Modern athletic competition is a group of events that can be loosely divided into running, jumping and throwing. The word "athletics" comes from  from the Greek word "athlon" which means "contest".

Athletic competition has been with us for thousands of years and has evolved to now include a large and varied assortment of athletic events for women and men of all ages. The complete list of athletic events now includes track and field events, cross country races, road running races, mountain running and race walking events.

Athletics has been the very heart and soul of the Olympic Games since the ancient Games at Olympia.

The simple foot races, jumping, discus and javelin events that were part of the early Games in Greece, these basic tests of speed, endurance and strength, have remained a key element of the modern Olympic Games.

The International Amateur Athletic Federation was founded in 1912 by Seventeen national athletic federations.

At the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris, women's events - 100m, 800m, 4x100m, high jump, and discus - were included on the programme for the first time.

The long run   The most mortal sin of all as a runner is to be constantly looking at your watch.  Time doesn’t go any faster if you stare wide-eyed at it.  Although some seasoned runners may argue this point, it has yet to be proven.
