What You Need to Know About NCAA Recruiting Guidelines

NCAA Guide to the College Bound Student Athlete

Entering into the unknown workings of the recruiting process sounds complicated, but it does not have to be. Understanding NCAA recruiting guidelines and knowing where to locate the most reputable resources will give student athletes the knowledge needed to be successful during their recruitment.

NCAA rules for athletes are in place to make the recruiting process fair for all student athletes attending NCAA colleges. Student athletes must comply with NCAA rules and regulations to remain eligible throughout their college career.

Becoming familiar with NCAA recruiting guidelines can take months to comprehend since the division manuals are dense reads—being close to 500 pages each and growing. It is in the best interest of student athletes to review NCAA division manuals so they can be successful in their recruiting process.

Will Every Student Athlete Need to be Familiar with Each Bylaw in the NCAA division manuals?

Not likely, but knowing that the resources are out there for your review makes it worth reviewing. You never know when you will need to fall back on NCAA eligibility information. Such cases may occur if you wish to transfer colleges or if you become injured during the off-season—don’t you want to know what your options are instead of others making the decision for you? Be informed and on top of all aspects of your collegiate experience.

NCAA supplies manuals filled with numerous articles and bylaws relevant to student athlete experiences. Each bylaw is set in place or ratified along the years because of situations that have arisen and to make collegiate sports fair across the board. NCAA bylaws are meant to be followed and are intensely enforced. If student athletes or coaches are found not in compliancewith NCAA rules and regulations, eligibility will be questioned.

NCAA Recruiting Guidelines and Social Media

As a recruit, you need to make it your job to know the team and the coaching staff of the universities that you are interested in. “Follow” or “friend” programs and coaches if they utilize social media sites. This does not count as direct contact and will not violate NCAA rules or regulations as they currently stand. NCAA rules state that college coaches will not be able to respond directly to recruits, but they will be able to send out updates informing all recruits of special events and team happenings.

NCAA rules do not allow coaches to make comments or post comments regarding possible recruits even if student athletes initiate the conversation. The only way college coaches can communicate with recruits using social media is through e-mail functions.
